Tips Accessory apartments... What are they? For seniors who have more home than they need but who do not want to move, there is the accessory apartment option. The idea is to create a separate apartment -- perhaps the basement, the attic, or the room above the garage -- within the home to rent out. The accessory apartment would have its own living and sleeping quarters, as well as a place to cook and a bathroom. Unlike a roommate, the accessory apartment provides an income, while reducing the amount of house to maintain alone. How important is it to find out about a community's philosophy of care? When making a major life decision like as choosing an assisted living residence or other senior housing alternative, it's important to be an informed consumer. Other questions to ask: Is the facility equipped to meet personal current and future needs? Is it associated with a nursing home? Is the facility located near family and friends? Does the facility offer social, recreational, wellness, and spiritual activities? Is the facility near shopping, hospitals, entertainment venues, or other businesses? Have complaints about the facility been filed with the Better Business Bureau or state licensing agency?
