The New Brunswick Department of Social Development established the Senior and Healthy Aging Secretariat under the Minister of State for Seniors to help seniors remain active and independent for as long as possible. The Long Term Care (LTC) system ensures that all seniors have the same access to services they require within the overall continuum of care.
Senior community resource centers, which provide access to information about healthy lifestyles, chronic disease management, program eligibility, and care giving, are provided by community volunteer organizations and government departments. Seniors who can live independently find a range of home supports provided by paid caregivers or community organizations, including support for family caregivers. Residential assisted living provides assistance with housekeeping and meals to seniors who can live independently with limited supervision. Residential specialized care facilities provide respite, convalescent/short-term or enhanced special care to seniors who require 24-hour supervision. Residential nursing care is designed for seniors who require 24-hour nursing care.
