The choice to seek an in-home caregiver should be a joint decision. Your parent(s) may be afraid to admit that they're losing the ability to function independently, so be compassionate and ease into the home care slowly. Let the new caregiver manage small tasks like basic housekeeping at first.

The 2005 MetLife Market Survey of Nursing Home and Home Care Costs found that the average hourly cost for home health aides was $19 and $17 for homemakers and companions. Costs may increase due to the level of services provided.

Home care providers offer a variety of therapy options performed by professionals and/or volunteers. Services for medical treatment must be prescribed by a physician, while support services do not require a physician’s clearance. Nurses can administer injections, IVs, and treat wounds. Physical and occupational therapists rehabilitate patients' mobility and strength. Social workers, speech therapists, and dietitians also provide home care, along with home health aides who assist in a patient’s activities of daily living. Homemakers and companions may perform light chores and maintenance.
