Black Friday on the Senior Housing Market?

‘Tis the season for visiting family members to have heightened concerns about Mom, Dad and other senior relatives.

These visitors are often led to wonder — is it time for assisted living? Should we consider home care? Given the increase in interest about care options, senior housing providers are “gear[ing] up for [the] holiday shopping season,” says Elizabeth Ecker in a new post on the Assisted Living Federation of America blog.

According to the article, “Some senior housing lead providers report spikes as high as 50% greater interest in the weeks following Christmas versus the weeks leading up to the holiday.”

Given this significant increase, assisted living providers are preparing now for the “onslaught of holiday ‘shoppers.’ ” However, these consumers are quite different from those who may be touring communities during the year. These are adult children and relatives who are in the area perhaps for a short time and want to pack in as many tours as possible, or find out as much information about potential communities, before returning home. The whole idea of touring a community or seeking information about home care agencies is relatively new to them.
