Emeritus Senior Living CEO Inspired by Elders

By Michelle Seitzer / Posted on 26 July 2012

“I wanted to work in health care management, so I took a job as a manager at a residential care facility for seniors in Los Angeles. I found my calling — I loved it.”

These are the words of Granger Cobb, the 51-year-old president and CEO of the one of the nation’s largest assisted living chains, Emeritus Senior Living. In June, Cobb shared his personal story in the New York Times, starting with the inspirational influence of his father and finishing with his current post at Emeritus. He talks about the residents — the elders who inspire him and his work — and the dedicate staff who become their family. He tells of the company’s early beginnings, opening a community with cash from his wife’s teacher’s pension. At the end of that tenuous first year, they had succeeded… and “expanded to 14 communities.” (Get Cobb’s full story here.)

A career in senior living can be tremendously challenging — but also rewarding. And in such a rapidly growing and evolving industry, there is a need for more people, leaders with vision and passion, like Granger Cobb. Read more about this need in our recent post, Support for the Next Generation of Senior Living Providers.
