Trend Watch: Top 5 Senior Care Apps

By Michelle Seitzer / Posted on 16 December 2011

Technology is fun, and there are many apps, gadgets and systems are designed purely for our entertainment to prove it.

Technology is helpful too; there are tools that foster efficiency, tools that remind us to take medications, tools that help us keep track of doctor’s appointments, work schedules, payroll, and more.

Many of these functions are particularly helpful for the senior care industry, which is comprised of millions of people, informal caregivers, healthcare professionals, and of course the seniors themselves. Aptly, the masses are turning to technology for a number of uses, some fun and some functional. SeniorHousingNews.com recently gave a review of five great apps, programs and gadgets:

  1. Memo Touch: an easy-to-use tablet for seniors and caregivers to coordinate schedules, creat appointment reminders, and more.
  2. Elder 911 and Elder 411 apps for the iPhone, by Presto: a comprehensive system that covers a number of important senior care issues, from crisis management to planning ahead
  3. eCaring’s home health care management system: primarily for home care providers to coordinate a vast network of information
  4. Virtual Health: checks blood pressure, weight and glucose via video-conferencing, among other features
  5. Digital healthcare suite for mobile care management, by Verizon Wireless: a one-stop care coordination shop

Talk back: What’s your favorite senior care app?

I bought the MEDQ Pill box for my parents. Talk about a problem solver. It has individual boxes that flash at the times they set to take their meds. It beeps as well, making forgetting virtually impossible. It has given both of us some “peace of mind” Everybody who takes meds needs to check it out. google MedQ Pillbox and see what I mean

  3. thanks Lee, and Michelle – for great info. Mine is more a question than an app recommendation: with medication errors a huge issue, I think what’d be great is an app that helps fit meds properly into our daily lives, and prompts ensuring interpretation’s right. For eg, someone who’s a ‘grazer’ may have a heck of a time determining when stomach’s empty (!). I’ve been pondering and collecting some examples of meds confusion, and bet there’s way more to add.

    Dear Michelle,

Thank you for your interest in the eCaring system and for posting about us on your blog! We were thrilled to come across the entry and sincerely thank you for the coverage. These are important issues facing million of families, so the information that your blog provides is extremely important and I thank you for it.

At eCaring, we’ve created an easy-to-use intuitive system that enables caregivers to report, monitor, and track the status of a home care recipient, from their activities of daily living to their state of mind. You can view this information online, anytime, anywhere and share it with the hearts and hands supporting your home care recipient, including other family members, care managers, physicians, or other professionals.

eCaring is seeking a limited number of users to join our Beta User program and to provide feedback on their experiences. We would love the opportunity to collaborate with you, spread the word about eCaring, and learn about how we can be a part of #ElderCareChat and all the great work you do at Seniors for Living.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Best regards,

    Melody
