If you’re on Twitter or any social media network, you probably heard about/viewed/shared this smile-inducing video produced by – and starring – members of the Clark Retirement Community in Grand Rapids, Michigan:
Even the Canadian singer Michael Bublé, whose cover of Feeling Good was the basis of this “LipDub”, agreed that it was impossible to watch the video without smiling. Bublé told CNN: “I look at all of them with great reverence. It made me really happy and they’re so effing cute.”
With almost 400,000 views so far, the video was a joint effort between Clark’s senior residents & staff and students, alumni, and professors from the Grand Valley State University Film & Video Production department. Besides making viewers smile, the collaboration certainly shows that 1. Life can be quite grand in a senior living community, 2. Seniors know how to have fun, and 3. I can only hope to look as good in a swimsuit as those ladies in the pool did (well, I guess that’s what I got out of it, but nonetheless, taking care of yourself keeps you vital through the ages)!
As a former activities director who has worked in that type of setting, I can really appreciate the hours of coordination, persuasion, and perspiration that went into making the video. But I would guess that their efforts certainly paid off – really, who wouldn’t want to live there after watching that clip?!
Besides the knockouts in the swimsuits and the creative costumes, decorations, and overall participation, I was most impressed by the great sense of community that shone through every minute of this truly enjoyable piece.
Moving into assisted living or a retirement home is a complicated transition for many seniors – including the family members left behind – but that doesn’t mean you can’t be happy there, can’t make new friends there, can’t enjoy community life after living independently for decades.
