Dining Options in Assisted & Independent Living

By Michelle Seitzer / Posted on 13 July 2011

Food is a central component of our lives. We need it to survive, but it also enhances our existence, a la family traditions around the table and social gatherings centered on food (what’s a party without it?).

A search for the best senior care community to call home, be it assisted living, independent living, or Alzheimer’s care, must factor in the quality of the food, and the availability of different dining options.

Are meals served in a community dining room? Are there other venues in the facility – a café, bistro, private dining room, snack bar, outdoor grills – for residents and visitors to dine as they choose? What does the meal plan include? Are guests welcome at meals?

Brookdale Senior Living’s Growing Together dining services program received recognition from ALFA (Assisted Living Federation of America) this year. With a goal of an improved dining experience for residents in mind, the Growing Together program was designed to support Spanish-speaking dining services employees who serve at Brookdale Senior Living communities.

Most websites for senior care communities have a tab/page devoted to outlining their dining services program, and many are now offering a meal as part of an admissions tour, so that prospective residents and families get a sense of the community’s food and service standards.
