Get Your Eyes Checked, Says Mrs. Brady

By Michelle Seitzer / Posted on 29 July 2010

We’ve got a classic case of mother knows best here, and the advice comes from one of TV’s most famous and perhaps best-loved moms of all time: Mrs. Brady.

Florence Henderson’s five-year run as Carol Brady (and dozens more movie/spin-off/variety show appearances thereafter) certainly kept her busy in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Today, she continues to manage a busy schedule as a performer, musician, motivational speaker, and most recently, by way of a life-changing personal experience, a spokeswoman for Bausch + Lomb, the global eye health company, as they launch an educational initiative on preserving vision into the golden years.

Whether you see her as Carol Brady or Florence Henderson, she strongly advocates that boomers and seniors schedule annual eye exams. Age-related changes affecting vision (such as cataracts or presbyopia) may be a natural and anticipated part of aging, but as is the case with many health conditions, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you are experiencing diminished vision, speak up. Let your doctor know. Make an appointment with an eye specialist if you don’t already see one.

Diagnosis is an important first step here – a physician can determine the cause of diminishing vision and therefore prescribe a more fitting treatment and action plan. In the case of Ms. Henderson, a common, corrective surgery did the trick.

When I think of what I’d like to do when I’m retired, many (if not all) of the activities which come to mind involve clear, sharp vision: reading, writing, traveling, catching up on all the Oscar award-winning movies I’ve wanted to see.

How about you?  Don’t let impaired vision cramp your retirement style if there’s something you can do about it. And listen to your mother – or should I say, Cindy, Jan, Marcia, Peter, Greg, and Bobby’s mother – in this case, she truly knows best.
