Welcome to the March 3, 2010 edition of boomers and seniors – news you can use. For the last couple of weeks at SeniorsForLiving.com, we were all about Random Acts of Kindness for a Senior Week. It was a great reminder to be extra kind to a senior near you — even the smallest gesture can mean a great deal to a grateful senior.
Learn more about how you can Slow Down, Take Notice and just Be Aware for some easy ideas for making a senior’s day.
Once you do that, be sure to check out the great resources as contributed by some of the best boomer/senior bloggers around. Enjoy!
Boomer Financial Issues
No matter where you are in your retirement countdown, changes are somewhere along the lines, you may have changed jobs and have an old 401K that you’ve never done anything with. June Tree explains a much better option in her post Saving For Retirement? Best Move For Your Retirement Plan at The Digerati Life.
Ready for tax time? Jeff Rose presents What to Bring To Your Tax Accountant To File Your Taxes at the Good Financial Cents blog. Print it out, and get your paperwork together, without leaving anything behind.
“When your retirement nest egg doesn’t turn out how you planned, don’t despair,” encourages Joe Plemon. “It is time to redefine your retirement.” Get his tips at the Personal Finance By The Book blog in Retirement Funds Tanked? Time to Redefine Your Retirement.
Plemon also covers another important topic for those of you who are nearing your golden years: Should You Leave an Inheritance to Your Children? “Leaving an inheritance is a dicey issue. Should you? How much? Now or later?” he poners. “This post doesn’t have all the answers, but will challenge your thinking.”
Health & Wellness
Did you know that the delicate soft tissues of the body can be manipulated to improve blood circulation, relieve pain, and increase the range of motion? Chris & Chat explain just how in their post, Elderly Therapeutic Massage. Learn more about the benefits of geriatric massage at C&C Spa and Facial Care Center.
Recent events in the economy have served as a wake up call for more than finances; for some, it is clear that fundamental changes need to be made in the way they live,” says Diane Steward. That’s why more and more people are seeking a healthier lifestyle, she says. Start with her Top 50 Blogs to Help You Live Healthy posted at BSN Program for lots of healthy reading.
Senior Care/Caregiving
From having the dreaded “conversation” to having to one day think about clearing out a loved one’s home, if you have aging parents, you should discuss how to handle their estate. Viki Kind presents her Interview with Julie Hall, author of “Boomer Burden: Dealing with your parent’s lifetime accumulation of stuff,” which addresses concerns such as these. Check out the tips at KindEthics.com.
Dealing with a loved one’s dementia is challenging, but having the right information and a good support network can help get you through it. A great start is Tom Bills‘ Guide to Dementia Care and Alzheimer’s Care at Home Part 1. The post covers many important topics for dementia caregivers including contemplating dementia home care, senior safety, how to create a comfortable environment for the special needs of someone suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, and more. Don’t miss it at In-LawSuite.com.
Contest alert: A brand new spy novel can be yours courtesy of Kaye Swain at the SandwichINK.com blog. “Something most of us who are caring for the elderly parents in our family can agree on: Having a book handy makes time go faster while waiting at the doctor’s office, dentist’s office, hospital, etc. SandwichINK is excited to present a fun contest for all of you senior home care givers (and grandparents too!). Another great issue of Boomers and Seniors: News You Can Use! I’m looking forward to reading the various posts over the next few days! Thank you for including SandwichINK in this. That particular giveaway has ended, however you will find a bright red link there to one other giveaway – for Spare Spikes – rubber “ice slippers” that slip right over shoes with mini-spikes in them. Perfect for those times you must go out in the snow or to keep in your car as part of your winter weather emergency kit – for yourself or your aging parents. I’m personally hoping spring will spring soon! But until it does, those are quite handy to have around.
Thanks again for another fun Boomers and Seniors
