But, did you know that many state and local governments have assistance programs for the elderly? These programs may differ slightly from one another and there may be an age or income requirement; there also may be a maximum dollar or percentage amount provided.

The simplest way to find out if your area offers a discount is to call your local providers for services such as water, electricity and gas. Additionally, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) may yield some financial help. State LIHEAP programs can provide more information.

Another approach to saving on seniors’ energy bills is the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). This program helps low income citizens improve the energy efficiency of their homes.
